Learn about the French and Indian War, the last of the Seven Years’ War. This war is often seen as one of America's earliest wars and has gone down in history as one of America's first wars. The British had been expanding westward since the 17th century. They colonized many areas in North America, but there were some areas left untouched including parts of Canada and Florida. New France, which consisted of what is now Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Labrador, Canada East (Quebec), Canada West (Ontario) was outside British control until 1763 when it declared its independence from Britain following French defeat during the Seven Years’ War. Thessalonssus, also known as Fort St. Jean, was on Nova Scotia's north shore. This fort had been built on the northeast corner of the peninsula since 1626. It was very important for protecting the port of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was under constant threat of attack from New France and it had strategic importance because it provided protection for Halifax, Nova Scotia which was the capital of New France at this time. The people who can be found behind canoes and muskets are the native Americans. The natives were very important during this war because they supplied them with food and other resources that they needed without any payment in return. Many of the natives joined the British side to fight against New France. The natives were very important when they provided land for the British to build forts and when they helped in battles. When many of these battles occurred, they would take cover in the woods and would help by firing from hiding. These natives helped in battles because they knew what was going on around them and knew how to hide in order to surprise their enemies. There were four main parts during this war: Fort William Henry, Fort Maurepas, Fort Duquesne, and Fort Beauséjour. Fort William Henry is located on Lake George near Lake Champlain. The British controlled the fort around the year 1755. It eventually fell to the French because of its location on an island. The British lost it because of a series of bad decisions that were made by the commanders of other forts that surrounded it. Fort Maurepas was located just off of St. Augustine, Florida. This fort was built in 1733, so it was one of the oldest at the start of this war. The British planned to have many men stationed here to defend St. Augustine from attacks by Indians and French settlers from New France. However, there was not enough people to protect the fort. The French won this battle because they had more soldiers than the British. Fort Duquesne was located at what is now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A makeshift fort had been built near this location in 1750 by the French in order to protect their frontiers from attacks by the British The last battle that occurred during this war was Fort Beauséjour which happened in what is now Maine. The British lost this battle because of a bad decision they made in deciding to have too many men stationed here. cfa1e77820
